"No one can go back and make a brand new start.  Anyone can start from now and

     make a brand new ending."
                                                       ~ Unknown

Screen Kids:  Is the computer age leading to attention deficit disorder?

Baroness Susan Greenfield commented at the recent Mind and its Potential conference on the changing environment and its link with shorter attention spans.  She was referring to the “Screen Kid” phenomenon whereby we are seeing our children spend increasing amounts of time in front of a screen – whether that be a television, computer screen or mobile phone.

She linked this not only to shorter attention spans but also to recklessness and increased risk taking.  All of which is facilitated by the “sensory trumping the consequences.”

But is it all really this bad?

Dr Jane Burns argued that whilst this may be so, technology is providing the path for young people to remain connected in ways that were not possible many years ago.  The advent of wikis, blogs and social media facilitates not only the sharing of information but forums and websites like beyondblue.com and moodgym.com can provide many young people with opportunities to explore more sensitive issues like their mental health.

Dr Bruno Cayoun, a leading clinical psychologist specializing in the practice of mindfulness in cultivating 1) focus and concentration, 2) acceptance and cognitive flexibility and 3)self control (of emotions, impulses and behavior) argues that a regular mindfulness practice can actually balance out these negative effects of  “screen time.”

Perhaps Dr Burns was right when she said; “what is made of the web is up to us.”

We at Magic Yoga Mat are dedicated to creating an online resource for parents, teachers and children that provides not only stories, activities and relaxation practices, but also encourages the feedback from parents and kids to help us create something that really helps everyone to practice yoga – and mindfulness at home.

In preparation for the Chaos of Christmas try this exercise with your Yoga Kids:-

Start with 2-3 minutes, then increase to 5,  10, and eventually to 15.  This is my favourite introduction to mindfulness practice with kids.  Sit back to back with your child and breathe together.  This way you concentrate on each breath and get a direct sensory experience of your body breathing and the warmth of connection with another.

If your child tends to fidget, try sitting with them in your lap in a cuddle.  Place your hand on their chest or back so they know where to breathe, and count 10 breaths.

Share Yoga This Year with our Christmas Gift to You:-

In the spirit of Christmas - and because we love sharing yoga with kids and hearing how they practice at home, we are offering a package that includes all four Magic Yoga Mat eBooks for just US $25!  That's just a little over half the regular 4 pack price and only for the next few days.
Follow this link to our kids yoga Christmas special section.

This week in Abundance Abounds:-
I watch a respected psychologist, who came to his conversation with the Dalai Lama with such earnestness that he is forgetting to actually converse.  Instead he appears to be caught up in what it means to him to be an "expert."  I run another business that specialises in "expert" witness services for court.
As I watch the Dalai Lama i wonder if the key to being an expert or an authority is "to listen, synthesise and share" rather than lecture and judge.  It seems an authentic connection and communication then becomes possible.
As a kids yoga teacher, this particular realisation helps me to talk and connect with kids wisdom rather than talk at them.

"Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallesst acts.  This is the secret to success"

I have been blessed this morning with a most inspiring experience - The Dalai Lama is in attendance at the Mind and its Potential Conference, and not only is he speaking on the qualities of mindfulness and compassion but he embodies their very practice.

And just before we break for lunch, I prepare the presentation that I am to give at a lawfirm (hopefully before we return for the afternoon sessions).  I look at the content I have collected together to FILL the allocated hour...
But what if I go in with the intention of being present to and inspired by whatever is present, then perhaps the content will arise itself.

"There's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self"

  ~ Aldous Huxley

The tram on Flinders Street, the tram I am waiting for will be delayed by 10 minutes...  And before I know it frustration and irritation have come to wait with me.  My awareness fills with the following thoughts: "What am I going to do..?",  "How am I going to fill the next 10 minutes whilst I wait..?",  "Do I have a book...?"

As I re read that sentence the word "fill" immediately stands out.  More and more I am noticing this incessant need to fill everything - my time, my self, my stomach, my brain..., with information, food, sustenance, stimulation.  And yet this very need to fill completely removes the possibility of contentment or as the yogi's call it, Santosa.    Perhaps all I may ever need or want is already available if I open myself up to it.

And whilst my ego is not really sure that it wants its sense of power to be usurped this way.  I think I will try actually waiting for the 10 minutes.  Simply being present; to the space, the stillness, the possibility of this moment.

Creating Confident Kids

Beat the Heat with this refreshing treat - guaranteed to please Kids and Parents alike!

If you like me have been filling a little hot and flustered with Melbourne's incredible heat this week, then try this cool treat.  Blend together fresh Watermelon, frozen Blueberries, some fresh Mint and a few ice cubes to make the most delicious purple treat.

I discovered it at the fabulous Kafe in Ubud, Bali recently!

This week in Abundance Abounds:-

Whinging...Complaining...Moaning...  Call it what you like.  I was on a roll and nothing was going to stop my rant.

"There's not enough time..."  "I feel ungrounded, unsettled..."  "There's not enough..."  "I need...." blah blah blah.  And then suddenly the "poor me" soliliquy was interrupted by uproarious laughter... (full entry)

Creating Confident Kids:-

It's a well known fact that for most of the population their biggest fear is talking in public.  Help your kids overcome anxiety by encouraging them to teach you something.

In one of my Kids Yoga classes there is a young girl who doesn't like to speak up in the class.  She prefers the quieter activities like colouring in and writing.  As I knew she liked to do this I encouraged her to write a relaxation story for the class and to guide us through it.  She really loved sharing her story with us, and as I listened to her lead us all in a series of relaxations over the course of the term I was delighted to see and hear her sense of power and confidence grow.

Invite your children to create their own relaxations or check out Magic Yoga Mat's story books or The Places I've Been relaxation eBook for ideas.

Whinging...Complaining...Moaning...  Call it what you like.  I was on a roll and nothing was going to stop my rant.

"There's not enough time..."  "I feel ungrounded, unsettled..."  "There's not enough..."  "I need...." blah blah blah.  And then suddenly the "poor me" soliliquy was interrupted by uproarious laughter.  I couldn't help it.  My issue was not really about not enough, rather it was about too much!

When I said "I feel ungrounded" what I was referring to was the challenge of living in two places at once.  My recently engaged partner and I are about to move in together so I find that whilst I still live in my home I also live at his.  And in a world where there are people struggling with the global financial crisis and have or are about to lose there homes, here I am fortunate enough to live in two.

And in that moment there was so much abundance that I stopped feeling overwhelmed and re-connected with that joyful enthusiasm I remember from my childhood.  The one associated with the beginning of the weekend with two whole days in front of me, two whole days with the promise of possibility.

So as we head towards the coming weekend, with two whole days stretching out in front of us, discover what it is that you have too much of in your life and see how it feels if you look at it from the position of gratitude and abundance.

Feel free to share them with us here at Magic Yoga Mat.

"You and I possess within ourselves, at every moment, under all circumstances the power to transform the quality of our lives "

  ~ Werner Erhard

It's been a little while since I've sent out any newsletters to you and for that I apologise.  During my hiatus I've spent a little time reflecting on what it is I would like to do with this space and on a recent yoga retreat in Bali was inspired by one of the members of our tribe, Neville Christie who has made a habit of keeping a daily journal of what he has coined "Wonderful Thoughts".  I sat with this for a little while and have decided to start keeping a blog dedicated to thoughts of abundance.

This week in Abundance Abounds:-

My fiance and I were driving in Richmond last night, as we are on so many nights, and came to a stop at the intersection facing MacRobertson's Bridge (i think that's what it is called).  My fiance commented that it seemed to be much brighter than normal, and we realised that 4 new lights had been put up on every pillar, thereby bathing the bridge in a warm glow.

Now we've driven over this bridge so many times but it was only when we were forced to stop, that we noticed the abundance of light that now bathed one of Melbourne's oldest bridges.

It was this moment that inspired the Abundance Abounds blog for me, certainly nothing earth shattering but for me it was note worthy.

Notice where there is abundance in your life?

And if you would like to share your experiences of abundance - however inspired or mundane they may seem, share them with us at rachael@magicyogamat.com

We Need Your Help! - Kids Yoga Survey

Free Image Hosting

For those of you who are not sure of who we are, Magic Yoga Mat was created by Bonnie and I.  We are two qualified yoga teachers, specialising in childrens yoga, who wanted to share fun and engaging resources, including, games, activities and stories as a way of sharing their passion for kids yoga with children, parents and teachers wherever they may be.

We have been in the process of developing a range of activities, stories and relaxation products to help you share yoga with the children in your lives, whether you are a teacher, a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle … And to make sure we get it right, we need your help to find out exactly what it is you would like!

So we've attached a quick survey, it will only take 5-10 minutes to complete (it has 15 questions and is mostly tick a box) and to thank you for your time, we'll send you out a copy of one of our children's relaxation recordings.

When you reach for the stars, you may not quite get one, but you wont come up with a handful of mud either.

Thank you to all of you who have been so patient whilst we redesigned and built our new website!  We have finally finished it and it is fully functional - (and the crowd goes wild!).  This has been one of those ever evolving processes and we hope that we have created something that is now easier for you to use and enjoy.  You will notice we have created a Kids Playground section that we hope to post stories, drawings and photo's that children create during their yoga practice.  So if any of your children would like to see their work on line, please don't hesistate to send it through to us.  And remember we are still running our colouring competition, so download the picture and get colouring!  The one's we have received so far, look fantastic!

We at Magic Yoga Mat would like to thank you for your patience by offering you our "we're officially excited that our website works!" special which is all four of our kids yoga eBooks and the relaxation mp3 recordings for just $27!!

And a little treat for Parents:-

Nina Isabella from MamaShanti's delicious Chai recipe:

1 star anise
1 tsp dried ground licorice root
